about

The initial intention behind Boys to Men was to write a song that focused on how Black men fight for liberation but rarely acknowledge the intersection of their Blackness with their manhood. As a result, you often get men who fight for Black liberation but do not include Black women in that freedom. My opening verse starts with a fight-the-power mentality and evolves into acknowledging that my fighting has left the Black women around me exposed "my Aaliyah just crashed / I was so busy fighting against the power Mona Lisa got cracked". Semira's verse tells the side of the story I can't. She commands the attention of the song -- my platform as the song and album creator is essentially handed over to her voice, and carries us into the next phase of the album.

lyrics

Rich Robbins:
The hills have eyes and the walls have ears
And the iPhone got your fingerprint
Gold drips from my fingertips
Government got my fingers bent
I took the knife out my back
Who stabbed ya?
Republicans and Democrats
Criminals with the badge
I see my face on the tv
Not a human I’m Black
Took everything I am
Fuck em all I got cash
But here’s a twist to the story
My Aaliyah just crashed
I was so busy fighting against the power Mona Lisa got cracked
The Y chromosome is ass
Killing everything in path
Niggas think they get a pass cuz they read a book and they wrote a status
Good job
I was fighting the power until I became the power that someone was fighting against

Semira Truth:
I hold the weight now
Throwing it out , no it aint sound
I hold the weight now
Throwing it out , no it aint sound

Rich Robbins:
Baby boys why you gotta be so insecure
Baby girls sorry that you gotta be paranoid

Semira Truth:
Aint boxing bag aint the rag used for floors
Aint the bitch and the store
You can’t pull from me
Aint gon wait around for an epiphany
The bitter sweet of caring for
The Kerosene
Blowing up
embarrassing
Dont ask me for shit, if you aint doing shit for me
Set your pupils to the third degree
I need blessings in my hand
A offering
Bandstand saying sorry
Aint enough jewels for me
Why the home look so bleak
